My work explores not only the beauty of nature but of people who appear to be looking right through you. The images of nature are lonely and still and those images of people tend to show emotion with a direct view into their life at that moment in their eyes. Heavily inspired by photographer Nan Goldin, my favorite images to produce are of what is and who is around me living real life, which sometimes mirrors the sadness that engulfs many of us. I’m fascinated by the polarity of nature images to the portrait images and this can be seen in my newly published book titled, Abstracted Distractions: teetering between here and gone which showcases images from the past twenty years. Inspired by my artist residencies new work entitled See Me, illustrates the moments that tend to be missed while most go on with their day. This work suggests the value of slowing down and seeing your surroundings. I realized if you watch a child they look at everything that surrounds them, they watch people walking by, walk slower, and take in their surroundings. Adults tend to have their heads down or checking their phone. See Me showcases people and locations nationally and internationally drawing on the comparison of subject matter. This series title See Me derives from the irony of not being seen as I photograph my environment of those who are passing by.
