Pricing Artwork
The most basic way to start thinking about pricing your artwork is to keep track of how much you spend on supplies and how many hours you spend to complete the pieces. You want to make sure you are taking your cost into consideration first, then you can begin to think about profit.
To get an idea of the cost of your supplies, let's breakdown five of your completed artworks:
Artwork Title:
Artwork Size:
Hours Invested to Create:
Supplies: Cost:
Total Cost of Supplies:
Some artists find it easier to price their artwork by square inch. You might choose this option if you’d prefer to have a set standard for your artwork rather than calculating the cost and time it took you for each separate piece of art.
Example:
Artwork Size: 12 inches x 12 inches = 144 square inches
$3.00 per square inch
144 square inches x $3.00 = $432.00
From here, you can round up or down, whatever feels right to you. You may need to adjust the price you set per square inch depending on supplies, hours invested, and experience. This could mean lowering the cost or raising it depending on these factors. Make sure to add pricing of framing if you are going to sell framed and ready-to-hang artwork. If you are selling through a gallery, online selling space, or an art consultant, make sure you are calculating what their percentage of commission will be so that you have an idea of how much you will actually receive for your artwork once all is said and done.
Deciding what you will charge for your artwork by square inch will help if you choose to do commissioned artwork or large-scale murals. You can certainly do a combination of both of these methods to price your artwork; there is no right or wrong way.
